Poems

I believe in the power of words and their ability to create new worlds. I believe in the power of Black women, especially those who have come before me. I believe in the power of my writing.

Why I Write

I write to tell my story and the stories that have not been told, the stories that have been erased from history, but most importantly the stories that deserve to be apart of history. The girl who sits at the back of the class with her head buried in a book, her hand moving faster than others can blink, her story is a story worth telling. My story is a story worth telling.

I write because when I don’t feel like speaking, writing is my voice. Because when all else fails, I know I can depend on pen and paper. I write to change the narrative so the generations of Black children after me never have to ask why the main character doesn’t look like them. I write because I want a love story where the Black girl doesn’t have to suffer continuously before finally getting her happy ending. I write because Black women and girls do not deserve the loud angry Black Woman narrative.  I write because representation matters. I write because the world needs more Black writers.

Writing will always be at the forefront of my life because when I write it’s not just for me. It’s for the ones who never got the chance to pick up the pen. Writing is who I am. It’s my freedom. It’s what I love to do.
